American dream turns to nightmare.

American Mary Lyons-Fletcher got the shock of her life when her visa application was thrown out, despite being married to an Englishman for 25 years.
The 54-year-old – who was planning a new life in Sheffield with husband Martin – was worried the weather might get her down or the locals wouldn’t like her. She never imagined the Government would stand in her way.
Mary and Martin Fletcher lived in the States until last June when they moved to the UK because his elderly mother is ill. Martin took over as landlord of The Nag’s Head in his home village of Killamarsh so they could be near her...

Alarming numbers of parents are being separated from their children indefinitely in the UK for the purposes of immigration control. It is difficult to imagine any other situation where children could have such scant attention paid to their welfare, says Sarah Campbell.
A new study by UK charity Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) has revealed that alarming numbers of parents are being separated from their children for the purposes of immigration control. Children suffered extreme distress, and in the majority of cases parents were eventually released from immigration detention, their detention having served no purpose at all. This raises serious questions about why they were detained in the first place.

An open letter to the people of Great Britain.

... Now, many of you have voted Ukip, maybe as a protest vote, or maybe, like them, you believe that Britain should basically close its borders altogether. Let's face it, some of you want it to remain a white-majority country too. That's why some think-tanks insist on restricting non-European migration alone. In response, all the parties would doubtless turn up their rhetoric against immigration, and a new wave of anti-immigration measures would be instituted. This government has already, more than any other, made it nearly impossible to come to this country as a student or a worker. One wonders what more it could possibly do in the upcoming Queen's Speech.
Naturally, I worry. I feel rejected, unwanted, often like a third-class subject. Labels, when used pejoratively, tend to do that. But, having made my whole life here, how could I possibly leave? Why should I?
So, the next time you read a vicious diatribe in the Daily Mail, or feel inclined to vote for Ukip, remember that immigration often has little to do with the economy. Remember that most of what you take for granted is a privilege, a luxury for the rest of the world, and even then, not everyone wants to come here and settle down permanently. Remember that the choices you make affect the lives of thousands of others like me. Most of all, ask yourself if you'd rather live in a country of cultural monotony and uniformity, or one which welcomed, among others, Handel, Henry James, Sigmund Freud, TS Eliot, Mitsuko Uchida and VS Naipaul, and have made this the most culturally exciting country in Europe.

Britain has become a country which denies its own citizens the right to live with their foreign partners, in the country of their birth.

The aftermath of the UKIP surge in the polls has led to a lot of soul searching in mainstream politics. One thing is clear though, UKIP is still missing concrete policy proposals including one on immigration.

Recent developments are encouraging the belief that migration across borders can be brought under control by an act of steely determination on the part of government. This is a big mistake.

Learning from Iraq: We need action not works from Cameron over Afghan interpreters.
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/rick-jones/afghan-interpreters-david-cameron_b_3220021.html
Wrong footed by public opinion, the UK government wrings its hands again by evading its legal responsibility to offer protection and safety for Afghan interpreters embedded alongside British forces during the conflict in Afghanistan.
At least 20 Afghan interpreters have so far been killed in the line of duty, many more have been injured. They and their families now live in constant fear of death threats from the Taliban, who have declared them to be targets for collaborating with the allied forces.
According to a recent YouGov poll for think tank British Future, 60% of the public who expressed an opinion believe the government should provide protection for this group by allowing them the right to resettle in the UK.

Ultimately though, UKIP seems to have tapped into a simple emotional, basic response. Their supporters just don't like immigration. If they have the right to argue on this simple, basic level, so shall I. I like immigration. We have always had it, and long may it continue. The more of us who agree and who state this clearly, the better. It is our society, and our country, and we deserve to be heard too.
