'Love Letters to the Home Office' at the Edinburgh Festival

Via:Katharine / Love Letters to the Home Office

There will be a one-off reading of the Love Letters to the Home Office show this Thursday 13th August at 10.30pm at the Edinburgh Festival.  It is in the Paines Plough ROUNDABOUT venue at Summerhall.

Tickets are only £4 for families affected by the Rules (no proof required - the organisers trust that divided families are who they say they are) so do please let divided families in the Edinburgh area know about the show. Please do also share on social media.

Here's the link to the show, and tickets can be bought here too:

An invitation from Katharine of the Love Letters to the Home Office team
The creative team of the Love Letters to the Home Office Book, enlarged to include Emma (who rather brilliantly kickstarted this whole new chapter into action) have been given the opportunity to create a show (it's a theatre event, really) that we are creating from the Love Letters from the Home Office book, in advance of the election.
Creating this theatre event, now, gives us a very real opportunity to share the impact of the 2012 Family Migration Rules with a wider audience than the book has reached so far: a very politicised audience, whose own voices can make an impact on the decisions being made at a Governmental level about this issue, right now, so that no more women are giving birth on their own, and so that no more families are separated for no reason other than their income.
I am writing a script for the show which features at least something from every story (it might be only one sentence, or in a very few cases the whole thing) intersperesed with information about the 2012 Rules, and the effect they have.

Send a white feather
It is clear that the government do not understand the anguish of the families divided by the 2012 Family Migration rules.  If they did, the rules would not have been put in place in the first place.  In the aftermath of the Court of Appeal's  judgement yesterday, it is time for us to share with David Cameron, the leader of our country, the impact of his actions.
We can do this very simply, by sending a white feather.
That's it.  Simple but effective.  And as we all send them to Downing Street, the amount of white feathers will add up until we can be ignored no more.
It can be a real feather taped to a card, or a paper feather, or a drawing... or whatever you like.

Send a white feather

http://lovelettershome.org/blog/send-white-feather/

A campaign in response to the recent court ruling, initiated by the 'Love Letters to the Home Office' team.

By Katharine

All we need to send is a white feather, and the name of our loved one(s).  We can write more if we wish, but we don't have to.

1.  Send them by post, send them by email, tweet them.  Do all three if you know how to, and if you can!

Post your feathers to:
The Right Honourable David Cameron MP
Prime Minister
10 Downing Street
London SW1A 2AA
United Kingdom

Email: Use this form to request an email address to send your white feather to.

Twitter: @Number10gov,  @david_cameron,

Use #whitefeather and #familiestogether and #lovemigration

2.  Share them on Facebook and your other social media too, to raise awareness of the campaign and to empower others to send their white feathers too.

3.  If you want to, you can email photographs of your white feather to info@lovelettershome.org and we will collect and document them on our site.

The additional means of sharing are great things to do, but the only important thing to do is send a white feather to David Cameron.  And we can all do that.

We can keep sending them until the rules are changed, our families are reunited and our human rights are restored.  One feather at a time, one family at a time, we will win this.

In solidarity and hope, and with love,

Katharine and the Love Letters to the Home Office team

A nice piece on 'Love Letters to the Home Office'

http://spuddings.net/?p=7952

'... It’s now available on Amazon at a (very!) good price of £4.50 – made as affordable as possible so people can gift them to their MPs, friends and anyone else they could possibly think of. The true stories behind immigration policies are often forgotten, buried under the frenzied media headlines, politicians’ rhetoric and a general sense of “it doesn’t concern me”. The problems and injustice of such discriminatory policies are easily forgotten by those who don’t aren’t directly touched by them. Love Letters to the Home Office wants to bring these experiences to more people. Public awareness is important.'

'... I’ve ordered my copy, and can’t wait for it to arrive. These stories are the ones that make it easier whenever it feels like “the loneliest thing in the world”.'

Dominic Self writes on 'Love Letters to the Home Office'

http://dominicself.co.uk/blog/item/2014/04/love-letters-to-the-home-office/

'Tonight I was invited by Abbi to join the book launch of Love Letters to the Home Office, a collection of stories about families kept apart by the UK’s 2012 immigration laws. These reforms mandate a minimum income of almost £19,000 before you can begin to get your partner or your family home.

'As it happens, I do know a little of what it’s like to say goodbye to someone you love at an airport, knowing that you have no legal right to stay in the same place together.

'But that is nothing compared to the stories in this book...'

'Since 2012, people in the UK have no longer had the same human rights as each other.  Our human rights, and lack of them, are now based on our income.

'Your ability to be with the person you love depends, if you are from different countries, on how much money you earn - even if you have enough to support you both....'

http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/david-cameron-we-call-on-you-to-create-a-home-office-visas-and-immigration-section-that-works

'When we started the Love Letters to the Home Office project it was because of the effects of one particular law that we believe violates the human rights that The Home Office Visas and Immigration Section is entrusted to uphold. As we gathered stories of those who have been affected by the unfair Family Migration law of 2012, we realised that no one we encountered, including ourselves, had had a positive experience of dealing with the Home Office Visas and Immigration Section. The themes were the same – confusion, frustration, inefficiency and delays. But worst of all is an overriding impression that the Home Office Visas and Immigration Section is not objective, respectful or accountable to the people it serves...'

Wednesday, 23 April 2014

Please come to the official launch of the Love Letters to the Home Office book.

With stories from the book, insights from immigration experts and activists and a manifesto.

Details from the organisers below :

Launch event: this Monday 28th April!

The launch day schedule is as follows:

5pm-6pm We meet at the Home Office (2 Marsham Street) and deliver love letters, copies of the book and the current petition.
Here's a link to the petition for those interested in signing:

6pm We walk the 3.2 miles to the launch, past the Royal Courts of Justice and finish at the launch venue in Angel. En route distribute handouts to the general public with a love story on one side and what they can do to get involved on the other side.

7.15pm-9.15pm Launch event at Coffeeworks project in Angel.

During the event, speeches will happen, and 3 separate readings of a limited number of stories will take place.

There will be an online event at the same time so all those involved who are not able to be present at the launch can attend the online launch... And thus be together that way. :)

Please rsvp to katharine@lovelettershome.org letting us know if you are able to be at either the online event or the London event, and if you are available, coming to the Home Office for 5pm, which will make a massive difference.  (If you are not in London, you might consider going to your local British Embassy or another government building to deliver your love letter.)

This is an open event and you are invited to bring as many guests as you wish, just let me know numbers.

We are looking for someone with a good fast internet connection who is internet-savvy to host the online event.  If you are interested in being that person, please let me know.

Love Letters available on the Amazon site

Don't worry about the fact that Amazon is currently saying 'out of stock'.  The book is set up to print on demand, so as soon as you order a copy, it will be printed for you!  (Also, the title currently is displaying incorrectly ("loveletters" rather than the correct two-word "Love Letters") and they aren't yet displaying our beautiful book cover.  Those issues will be ironed out next week.

The book is priced at £4.50, so that as many people as possible can read it, without cost being a factor.

We encourage people to consider buying copies to send to a local MP, newspaper editor, etc and enclosing a personal letter too.  Sharing our stories with individuals can make a massive difference.  (The reason that Love Letters was in the Guardian and Newsnight are currently filming some of you is because I shared about our project with people at work and at my friend's birthday party.  The more we talk about this, the more we create change.)

Love letters to the Home Office : Toni and Craig

http://lovelettershome.org/stories/toni-craig/

'... Little did Toni and Craig know that 4,129 miles across the ocean was the answer to their prayers. One faithful evening a simple introduction changed their lives forever. Instant messages became emails, emails became phone calls, and hours and hours of phone calls became the vacation of a lifetime.'

'There’s a wee boy in Chandler, Arizona, USA. He’s 15 months old and his name is Robert. He has some baby toys but his favourite thing in the entire world isn’t a toy. Robert loves his mum’s Samsung tablet. He calls it ‘Da da’ and carries it around the house all the time.

'Robert hasn’t seen his father since he was 6 months old. The tablet is all he knows of him. They talk on Skype when they can, but there isn’t always a good connection; he doesn’t understand why his dad is sometimes sad when they talk and play.

Love Letters to the Home Office

http://lovelettershome.org/

'Once upon a time, UK immigration law stated clearly: “at the centre of the UK immigration policy is the family unit.”

'This changed with the adoption of the 2012 Family Immigration Law. On 11 June 2012 the Government announced changes to the Immigration Rules for non-European Economic Area (non-EEA) nationals applying to enter or remain in the UK on the family migration route

'Now, a restrictive income requirement and other regulations mean the UK government can deny residence visas and legally separate husbands from wives, parents from children, and tear apart entire families.

'This project seeks to:

Unite the families separated by the law: creating a community of those affected and ending individual isolation
Draw attention to the law, and the fact that the UK currently has different human rights for families depending on how much they earn
Call for change from the Government
Show support for the Home Office and demonstrate the urgent need for investment, infrastructure and increased manpower within the Visa and Immigration systems, call for change in this area

Love Letters to the Home Office

Love Letters to the Home Office is a book of short stories written by people who are separated by the UK's 2012 Family Visa Law.

The law, with its artificially high financial requirement, means that people in the UK who earn less than £18,600 per year have different human rights to the rest of the UK population: these people do not have the right to live with their wives, husbands, partners and families from overseas (a right granted to all of us in Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights). While the rule is still in place, thousands of families are separated, unable to live together.   We are documenting the extraordinary love stories of these separated families, and tell the stories of love that crosses borders, oceans and seas.

Are you affected by the law?

Are you, or have you been, separated from your loved one(s)?

Would you like to take part in this book?

Love Letters to the Home Office is a collection of stories of love: of extraordinary moments in extraordinary relationships.   Please consider that more than one person in your family may want to submit a story.

For many people featured in the book, English won't be your first language.  Don't worry about that at all.  Just send us what you can, and if we need to, we will put you in touch with a ghost writer who will work with you to perfect your story.

We are currently looking for stories of the following lengths:
* 500 words
* 250 words
* Paragraphs - little moments anywhere between 40 and 100 words long

You won't have enough room to write your whole family or relationship history in the story.  Please focus on the moment or event that you want to share with us, and let the other details (which country your family member is living in, or how long you have been married, etc) be included as they naturally come up as you tell us the love story.

If you are stuck, and you don't know what to write about, these prompts may be useful to you:
- how does it feel when you see them at the airport?
- tell us the creative ways you celebrate your anniversaries while you are apart
- how their face lights up when they see you on Skype...
- the places that you have travelled to in order to see each other
- how it feels to simply drink a coffee together, or cook together, at last!

Email your story to editor@lovelettershome.org
Please include a phone number that we can contact you on, to talk to you about your story.
The closing date for submissions is 8th March 2014, and we encourage you to send yours as soon as possible for the best chance of being included in the book.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We encourage you to write a short story that focuses on beautiful moments that you and your loved one(s) share.  You don't need to write about the unfairness of the law: that is crystal clear in the context of the book being published, and we are much more interested in hearing your love story.  The same is true of the Home Office: most of us who have gone through the visa application process have experience of the system not having integrity and not working.  You don't need to write about this, unless it gives specific context to your love story.  Word counts are very limited, so don't waste yours on anger - tell us your extraordinary tales of love!
