 Some of the Syrians fleeing the conflict in their country have crossed Turkey aiming for Greece, in order to claim asylum in the European Union. But to get there they have to take to boats - and there have been persistent reports of Greek officials pushing them back into Turkish waters, sometimes with fatal results.

"Everything we would do for our families and our fathers, we do the same thing for these people. We bury them in the Islamic way," says Ekrem Serif-Oamadoglou, as he points to 400 freshly dug graves clustered on the remote hillside.

In an old military base on the outskirts of the German city of Frankfurt, a young Afghan man known by British soldiers simply as Barri is stuck in immigration limbo, wondering if he will ever see his fiancee again.

Baryalai Shams worked as a British army translator in Helmand between 2008 and 2009, but left after his family received death threats.

The way his life has changed since then is a terrible story of how the Taliban deals with people they consider collaborators, and illustrates the challenges facing many former Army interpreters in Afghanistan.

A vocal critic of the Apartheid regime, he was arrested and deported in 1961 after a play he wrote attacking it was staged in London.
