Following a recent article in the Daily Mail we have been criticised by Migration Watch for our funding sources. We would have preferred to avoid a direct dispute with a pressure group, but it is time to set the record straight...

Darcus Howe: Nationalism gone mad is threatening democracy in Britain.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/may/10/darcus-howe-immigration

Fifty-one years ago I arrived in Britain after a long journey on the SS Antilles. My trip had begun on the wharves of Port of Spain, Trinidad, picking up passengers in Martinique and Guadeloupe , then on to Calais before finally dropping anchor in Southampton. I was one of thousands of West Indians who left our tiny islands in response to advertisements for workers to travel to the UK. Not even the brutal murder of Kelso Cochrane in the Notting Hill race riots kept us away.

The underground, the buses, the trains, building sites, the Post Office, hospitals, factories, and industrial estates sucked in this avalanche of human labour.

We lived crammed into tiny rooms at the mercy of greedy landlords. And there were those who made it clear that dogs, blacks and the Irish were not welcome.

These policies were encouraged by politicians whom we may well describe as pioneers of racism and of vulgar white nationalism. They are the parents of Ukip. I know of no moment in the last 50 years when the issue of race and immigration did not grab the headlines. The announcement in the Queen's speech of legislation that will force landlords to police the immigration status of potential tenants is just the latest example...

World from Berlin: 'All will profit from new wave of immigrants.'

http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/press-review-on-mass-influx-of-european-immigrants-to-germany-a-898786.html

This week, Germany announced it received more immigrants in 2012 than it has in almost two decades. Yet rather than sounding the alarm, newspaper commentators are welcoming the trend. Most of the newcomers are well-educated and come from other countries in Europe.

Open letter to Obama.

http://globalvoicesonline.org/2013/05/07/yemen-open-letter-to-obama/

All Yemenis are against terrorism and condemn Al-Qaeda, yet are also against the violent and unethical use of predator drones in combating them. We are against the death of civilians, whom you refer to as collateral damage in the war against terror. We are against the long-term effects on their communities and their lives. We are against any extrajudicial killings.

Greek far right gains ground.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/neo-nazis-and-right-wing-extremists-gaining-support-in-greece-a-894596.html

Nowhere else in Europe are neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists profiting as greatly from the financial crisis as in Athens. As they terrorize the country with violence, the police stand back and prosecutors are powerless.

The Municipal Theater in Piraeus, Greece, was bathed in an eerie light, with yellow floodlights and red torches combining to illuminate the theater's neoclassical façade, which now served as the backdrop for a macabre spectacle: At least 1,000 neo-Nazis and their supporters had turned out for a march, and red flags bearing a large, black swastika-like symbol flew from the building's front steps.

The right-wing extremist party Chrysi Avgi, or Golden Dawn, convened this demonstration on a Thursday in February to protest an arson attack on its local party office -- and to make another display of its strength.

Great post on the anniversary of thw Warsaw Uprising (which was on 20th April).

http://www.metafilter.com/127217/A-study-of-the-human-spirit

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began on 19 April 1943 in Nazi-occupied Poland, when rebellion broke out in the Jewish ghettos opposing Nazi Germany's effort to transport ghetto occupants to Treblinka. The rebellion lasted until 16 May and ended in tragic defeat, but it represented the largest single organized revolt by the Jews to (in Uprising leader Yitzhak Zuckerman's words) "rise up against their destroyers, and determine what death they would choose: Treblinka or Uprising."

Marek Edelman, an activist (both before and after the war) and cardiologist, was the last surviving leader of the Uprising. Before his death in 2009, Edelman recorded series of autobiographical videos in which he shared his memories of the ghetto and described his leadership of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The clips are hosted by Web of Stories (previously), and -- like all Web of Stories interviews -- can be watched as a series of short clips with fully searchable transcripts.

Busloads of police were brought in to a Beijing suburb a day after a protest over the death of a migrant worker.

Yuan Liya, a 22-year-old from Anhui, fell to her death on 3 May from a mall in Fengtai district in Beijing.

At least 100 people took part in a rare protest on Wednesday demanding her death be fully investigated. Many said her death was suspicious.
