Fog in Channel, continent cut off

There seems to be something of a misconception out in Twitter-land that the UK's immigration rules are more open than other developed countries, like Japan.
This is a myth. Read this man's experience of getting a spouse visa in Japan :
http://jamesinjapan.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/how-i-got-my-spouse-visa/

You will not see 1/ an income requirement which prevents half or more of the population bringing in a spouse ( http://www.migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/press-releases/women-young-people-and-non-londoners-are-most-affected-changes-family-migration-polic ) 2/ a Japanese language test requirement set to B1 level (the same level required to study at HND, or associate's degree, level), or 3/ a 'life in Japan' general knowledge/history test.
Also 4/ the foreign spouse's job can be taken into account.

An example form is here : http://www.atlanta.us.emb-japan.go.jp/SpouseVisa.pdf

Of course this all begs the question - what if Japan retaliates? What if the US, Canada, Australia retaliate?

What if Europe closes its borders to British expats? (Remember the old headling - 'Fog in Channel, continent cut off'?? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-01-24/fog-in-channel-cameron-cut-off.html )

The UK would become a very isolated, backwards kind of place. A poor place, in every meaning of the word.
